We went just cuz we could.  We stayed on 7th Ave & 57th St just south of Central Park by a block or so.  We bought Fun-cards for the public transportation system (trains and busses) so we only had ONE taxi ride the whole time we were there, and that was enough!  We visited the Central Park Zoo, had a tour and saw the Natural Science and Intrepid museum's (Intrepid is an aircraft carrier sitting down my pier 86 that you can walk around on).
